At the age of 14 years, James M. Campbell began a life-long career as a nurseryman by working summers as a laborer on the Campbell & Ferrara Nursery's farm crew. Jim Campbell pursued his growing interest in plants, gardening and landscaping at Virginia Polytechnic Institute where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Ornamental Horticulture. Over the last four decades while working as a crew member, foreman, landscape designer and now President of Campbell & Ferrara, Jim has acquired a few favorite trees and shrubs for special gardening themes: Virginia natives, shady places, colorful accents, privacy screening, aquatic gardens, four-season, and wet or moist places. We carry 1,000’s of trees & shrubs at our 8 acre nursery and Garden Center. Visit us and our plant experts & horticulturist will help you locate trees, shrubs and plants for your landscape.
ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS OF TREES:
- A single tree will reduce your air conditioning costs, reduce pollution from the atmosphere, provide erosion and storm-water control and offer wildlife shelter.
- Annually, one large mature tree can remove up to 26 pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, equaling over 10,000 miles of car emissions.
- One large tree can absorb as much heat as several window air conditioners and lower temperatures inside the home by ten degrees during the summer.
- Trees shading homes reduce a home’s attic temperatures.
- One tree's value to the environment.....$162,000 over 50 years! The environmental value of a single tree in monetary terms, has been documented by the USDA Forest Service Pamphlet # R1-92-100 which states that over a 50 year lifetime of a tree it:
- "generates $31,250 worth of oxygen
- provides $62,000 worth of air pollution control
- recycles $37,500 worth of water
- and controls $31,250 worth of soil erosion".
