Mosquitos are one of the many harmful and annoying insects we deal with during the summer season. To make sure your family is safe, it is always a great idea to know some DIY tips to prevent mosquitos from invading your yard. Before mosquitoes start multiplying, it’s good if you know some tips on how to ward them off.
So how can you ensure that your home is not invaded by mosquitos Here are some DIY tips you can do:
- Get rid of stagnant water
Make sure that there’s no standing water anywhere as it can be the best breeding ground for mosquitoes. The best way to get rid of mosquitoes is to drain any leftover water in your home like kiddie pools and other things where water can be stored – empty everything. Do not worry about your pool though – as long as it is chlorinated and the filter is working, it will not attract mosquitoes.
- Add plants that are natural mosquito repellant
There are plants that you can grow that deter mosquitoes. The most famous mosquito-repellant plant is the citronella; its smell masks the mosquito attractants. In fact, citronella is the most common ingredient in many mosquito sprays and repellants nowadays. Other plants that you might like to keep in your garden to ward off mosquitoes include catnip, lavender, marigold, basil, peppermint, and lemon balm.
- Clean gutters, fix screens and mow your lawn
Mosquitoes thrive in non-flowing water, regardless of whether it is dirty or clean. During the winter season, your gutters may be filled with debris so take time to clean it up so it doesn’t become a breeding environment for mosquitoes. Pull weeds too and make sure to fix your windows so mosquitoes can’t come inside.
- Remove junk
Even an inch of water is enough for them to lay eggs and reproduce. Eradicate all stagnant water and any unused items which can collect water. Evaluate your yard and pay extra attention to items and corners which can hold water and become a great breeding place for mosquitoes. If you have unused tires in your yard and you believed they are perfect for recycled pots in your garden, then make sure to drill a hole in them so no water will be collected inside.
- Treat your yard
When planning to treat your yard, choose an insect control with pyrethrins or pyrethroids. Pyrethrins is a natural insecticide with chrysanthemums as active ingredients. Aside from being non-toxic, it also eliminates pests and insects including mosquitoes.
If you follow these tips than you can be sure that your summer will be even more enjoyable – without the discomfort of having mosquitoes.
