FEATURED PROJECT

Minimal Maintenance Plantings

Location: Alexandria, VA

Client Objectives for Landscape:

The client recently had their old deck ripped out and a new one installed, leaving a ruined lawn area and empty planting space. They wanted to add vitality and color to the landscape and to get rid of the empty, muddy patches left around the construction area by adding plant beds with minimal maintenance selections. Additionally, they wanted to add trees and expand the back planting bed for additional interest and focal points. Their desired result was minimal maintenance, but an interesting landscape that they could easily enjoy from both their deck and main living area.

Special or Unusual Features:

The backyard is quite large but with several consistently wet areas. The challenge with the plant design was finding selections that could stand up to the water and an energetic dog. Adding river birches and other trees helps soak up excess water and breaks up the monotony of the large lawn-only areas, which has helped to address this issue. Defining new garden areas with well delineated borders while still allowing the family dog plenty of room to run around allows for the enjoyment of both humans and canines in the new landscape.
