Client Objectives for Landscape:

The lot is large for Old Town, shady and surrounded by old brick walls- very charming. The client wanted the landscape reorganized and refreshed; function and style were important. She requested a new patio, plants, a turf area for her active dog, a water feature, a storage area, and lighting so she would be able to use and appreciate the outdoor space safely in the evening. A low retaining wall was needed.

Main Features:

Overhauling this landscape required the removal of an old brick patio, shed, debris, and selected plants. The design enhanced the functionality and aesthetics of the outdoor living space. A flagstone walkway invites one through the side yard and leads to the flagstone patio which is also directly and conveniently accessible from the deck. The new shed, located in an unobtrusive spot along the flagstone path inside the gate, provides storage. The fieldstone wall along the walkway and the patio creates definition for the new planting beds which include interesting garden art throughout and a water fountain feature.

Lighting along the paths and patio and accent lighting on the trees enables family and friends to safely traverse the space and illuminates the beauty of the plants. New plants, including azaleas, hydrangeas, and boxwoods, were thoughtfully installed throughout the garden to provide a ‘Virginia’ feel.

Tucked into the back corner, off the patio, is an attractive synthetic turf area for the active and happy dog.

Major Challenges:

As usual with Old Town properties, access is always a little harder. Our crews had to go down a sidewalk and through a gate which was less than 36” with full wheelbarrows and supplies.

Special or Unusual Feature:

This transformative makeover maximizes the use of the available area and complements the charm of the old brick walls with a clean, functional, elegant space. The water fountain provides the soothing sound of water and is an artistic focal point. Garden art interspersed throughout the outdoor space reflects the style of the homeowner and creates interest.
