FEATURED PROJECT
Refreshed Landscape
Location: Chantilly
Client Objectives for Landscape:
They wanted to have a new look that would correct the common issues of a worn, aging original landscape, re-shape some awkward bed and shrub layouts, fix the disheveled patio, make the patio larger, correct the drainage issue in the back lawn, and replace some deck lighting that was damaged from sweeping. The side walkway needed to be reinstalled with a revised layout to account for the neighbor’s foot traffic and the dead shrubs in various areas needed to be replaced.

Main Features:
After reviewing these issues, we determined that the new landscape would have a more cohesive plant selection, with curving layouts. As they have large front yard, we agreed that creating a hedgerow along the front sidewalk and driveway would create a more protected space for the grandkids to play. We incorporated kid-friendly sensory plants with textures and fragrances and designed boulders and steppingstone paths with a foot bridge to create a passive playground effect. We brainstormed ideas to facilitate more use of the space to include a wood chip area for a future swing installation or slack line installation. The last step was installing landscape lighting in many areas to transform the entry areas, improve safety, and allow for some play time after dark. This beautifully refreshed landscape is kid-friendly and grown-up friendly. It provides the entire family with a special outdoor space to play and relax.

Special or Unusual Features:
We included large boulders to serve as a sort of hidden obstacle course for the grandkids to jump and walk on. A foot bridge was added to infuse a whimsical floating connection between the front patio seating and the porch area.

Major Challenges:
The major challenge was determining how to make the front yard more kid-friendly, while simultaneously leaving the views unobstructed for the guests. We had to establish a boundary without a fence, hence the use of a specific shrub called ‘Blue Cascade’ Distylium.
