FEATURED PROJECT

Woodland Retreat

Location: Alexandria, VA

Client’s Objectives for Landscape:

The client wanted to maintain a more contemporary naturalistic feel that would embrace and enhance the natural lay of the land. They wanted a more interesting, durable, and organic solution to replace the rotting and decaying deck, a larger water feature, and exterior lighting along the walkways and driveway for ease of ingress/egress. The landscape needed to be suitable for entertaining, and while inside the home, the client wanted to have a view from the rear windows of a special beautiful landscape feature.

Main Features of the Landscape Project:

A large stone patio with Tennessee, Pennsylvania Variegated, and Thermal Blue stone paver border was designed to replace the rotting deck. The contemporary naturalistic feel created with organic materials provide a beautiful and stylish venue for entertainment.

The 2-tiered waterfall and pond, visible from indoors, creates an atmosphere of organic natural beauty that is complemented by the soothing sound of the gurgling water; like a natural stream flowing down a slope.

Lighting throughout the entire landscape accents all the features, provides safety and security, and enables the clients to entertain into the evening.

Major Challenges:

The main challenges were the subtle and exaggerated grading changes and working with the natural stone to create more uniform steps. The patio elevation was altered from the original deck to create a more convenient step out from the rear door.

Special or Unusual Features:

A large water feature with a style that mimics the streams along the Appalachian trail was installed by skilled craftsmen who took advantage of the slope in the backyard. The large rear windows of the home frame this distinctive feature up nicely when viewed by the clients from inside of the home.

The design of the large stone patio with Tennessee, Pennsylvania Variegated and Thermal Blue stone, paver border creates a contemporary interpretation of the shoreline of a lake when viewed from above. The PA irregular is the tree line, the TN irregular is the beach, with the Bluestone as the water.
