SOLUTIONS TO HELP CHIP, DALE AND CRONIES FIND A NEW HOME
Eastern Chipmunks are generally solitary except during courtship or when rearing young.
Chipmunks, while cute and fun to watch, can cause damage to your landscape and plants. Chipmunks are ground dwellers. They are active during the day and move around cautiously and tentatively at night.
- Chipmunks will eat: fruit, vegetables, seeds, flowers, bulbs, pet food, slugs, snails, insects, small birds, eggs, and mice. They will chew on cable lines, air conditioning pipes, electric lines and pond liners.
- Chipmunks burrowing into the ground which leads to water undermining patio slabs, driveways and foundation walls. This undermining will eventually lead to water getting inside your home, cracked, cement slabs and broken driveways.
- They will tunnel and burrow into flower beds and trees leading to excessive water accumulation. This situation causes fungus and root rot ultimately causing plants to become sick or diseased. When they tunnel and burrow into retaining walls, the walls become weak and damaged leading to necessary repair.
- Chipmunks can carry fleas and tics posing potential health risks. Snakes like to eat chipmunks; they can attract snakes.
There are several ways to eliminate chipmunk infestation, and you will need to decide the method most suitable to you and your family. We recommend trapping chipmunks with a chipmunk cage and releasing 10 miles from their territory. IF you do not want to trap the chipmunks there are battery operated electrocution devices that kill the chipmunk instantly and do not harm any creature over 5lbs.
Once your infestation is under control, you will need to keep other chipmunks from moving into the existing burrows.
COYOTE URINE:
The only repellent which has shown to effectively keep chipmunks out of an area is COYOTE URINE. It is safe to pets, humans and the environment. Apply it near burrows, around trees, shrubs and plants where chipmunks are active. The use of urine really proves effective when applied before the animals have established themselves. If you know they are a nuisance in nearby properties, you should apply some around your property line every few months to help keep them off of your property.
For chipmunks which are chewing on plants, wires or pipes, use ROPEL SPRAY to stop them. Ropel tastes terrible and once the chipmunks get the taste of it, they will avoid treated surfaces. It is clear, odorless and does not stain. It will not harm pets, children or the chipmunks, but it will get them to stop chewing whatever has been sprayed… Generally, treatments last 30 days. Expect longer residual during dry weather and less with a lot of rain. Ropel tastes so bad that even trace amounts are enough to keep them away.
